Oscars 2016: Why is Leonardo DiCaprio wearing an FAU cap?

On Sunday night, Leonardo DiCaprio is heavily favored to win an Oscar for The Revenant.

Which reminds us of our favorite local bit of Leo lore — the FAU ballcap story. Here’s what Staci Sturrock wrote about it last year:

We were all atwitter Monday afternoon when Florida Atlantic University posted this photo of Leonardo DiCaprio sporting an FAU cap on the school’s Instagram account.

“Thanks for the love, Leo!!!” read the photo caption.

Alas, the photo is six years old. Our reporter Kimberly Miller blogged about it in February 2009.

Turns out, DiCaprio just liked baseball caps and initially wasn’t even sure what “FAU” stood for.

Oh well, file Leo’s hat tip to the Owls under “oldies but goodies.”
